W. Spencer Field Rd. will be closed at three locations beginning Mon., Mar. 16 through Fri., Mar. 20 as several projects are constructed to create a more resilient travel corridor. The timing of this construction coincides with the Santa Rosa County school district’s spring break so as not to interfere with those traveling to school.
The northernmost closure will enable Okaloosa Gas Co. to lower the high pressure gas lines that cross the W. Spencer Field Rd. just south of Berryhill Rd. as required for an intersection improvement project. The detour will be Berryhill Rd. to Chumuckla Hwy. (west) and Berryhill Rd. to Glover Lane (east). Concurrent with this work, Santa Rosa County crews and contractors will be working on two additional projects on W. Spencer Field Rd.
The central closure will be road work approximately 500 feet both north and south of the Benny Russell Park/N. Spencer Field Rd. intersection for installation of a series of speed tables as a traffic calming measure. Stop signs on W. Spencer Field Rd. will be removed after the installation of the speed tables. Access to Benny Russell Park will be from N. Spencer Field Rd. The detour will go around the Spencer Naval Outlying Field.
The southernmost closure will allow county crews to remove and replace a damaged section of concrete ditch on the east side of the road between the entrance of Hardee’s and the Winn Dixie shopping center. W. Spencer Field Rd. will be partially closed between Norris Rd. and Hwy. 90; southbound traffic on W. Spencer Field Rd. will be detoured onto Norris Rd. or White Rd., and northbound traffic turning off of Hwy. 90 onto W. Spencer Field Rd. will be diverted into the southbound lane through the construction zone.
