Santa Rosa County Celebrates GIS Day Nov. 14
Santa Rosa County will celebrate GIS Day on Wednesday, Nov. 14 from 1 to 4 p.m. This event is open to students, parents and the general public and will be held at the BOCC meeting room located at 6495 Caroline Street in Milton.
Geographic Information Science uses technology to study the earth and where things are located. Since the establishment of GIS Day in 1999, the field of geospatial technology has exploded, expanding GIS Day into a global event that demonstrates how far GIS extends into people's lives. This day also presents a forum for users to showcase their unique GIS accomplishments.
Santa Rosa County has utilized GIS to create easily accessible mapping applications and data downloads for the public. Through a new online mapping portal, citizens can now find county-wide emergency management information, road maps demonstrating where tax dollars are being used, and applications that help locate bike lanes, boat ramps, parks, and libraries throughout the county. GIS technology has also helped several departments, such as public works, building maintenance, mosquito control and parks and recreation go paperless in the field. In the rapidly developing world of technology, GIS is helping Santa Rosa County stay at the cutting edge of local government management.
