Floridatown Park to receive funds for shoreline erosionSanta Rosa County awarded $125,000 through the Florida Resiliency Coastline ProgramSanta Rosa County has been selected to receive a competitive grant in the amount of $125,000 from the Florida Resiliency Coastlines Program state funds to provide financial assistance aimed at preparing coastal Florida communities for current and future effects of rising sea levels, including coastal flooding, erosion and ecosystem changes. The funding will be used to address shoreline erosion at Floridatown Park, located on Escambia Bay in Pace. The proposal, submitted by the Santa Rosa County Environmental Department, will design a natural resource-based shoreline protection system at Floridatown Park as an alternative to armoring the shoreline. This is to prevent and reduce the impacts of large storm surge events and to improve the environmental value of the shoreline improving water quality and providing habitats for fish and wildlife. Phase I of the project was completed in April and consisted of a data collection, environmental assessment and development of an existing conditions model. This phase includes identification of three shoreline protection system alternatives presented at local community public workshops and engineering and design for the selected alternative, to be completed by April 2021.
